Coral Sun Therapy

About our Practice

I was inspired by the name Coral Sun because of its profound connection to my own name, Yushan. Shan, meaning coral in Mandarin, resonates deeply with me, as the vibrant color of coral has long been a favorite of mine. What draws me to this color is its extraordinary ability to radiate warmth and light, perfectly aligning with the core values of my psychotherapy practice: providing a safe, warm space for my clients to thrive. Similarly, the sun symbolizes hope, renewal, and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. My heartfelt wish is that through therapy, my clients will not only bask in the warmth I strive to provide but also emerge filled with hope and a renewed sense of purpose, ready to embark on their transformative healing journey.

Meet the Team

I was born in Taiwan and immigrated to California when I was 12 years old. After living in California for 16 years, I decided to move to New York to “check it out” and never in my wildest dreams thought that I would settle on the East Coast. Since I was a child, I have enjoyed helping disadvantaged students, which led me to invest myself in social work. In addition to focusing on the social work field, my hobbies include writing, photography, and traveling. Currently, I am editing a novel I wrote in 2007, a story I wish to share to the public. One of the main messages of the novel is to share the life experience of the 1.5 generation, who are often caught between two cultures. I often feel that we are neither fully American nor fully Asian foreign nationals. Another message I wanted to convey is that there is a wide range of Asian Americans, and each of their identity-searching journeys could be quite different from another. My hobbies not only help me relax but also assist me in gaining the ability to reflect, inspire, and motivate myself and others in both my personal and professional life.

Susan Chung, LCSW

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and hold licenses to practice in North Carolina, New York, and New Jersey. My journey began when a close friend of mine was diagnosed with major depression in 2001. Being able to support her through the process of receiving counseling services strongly motivated me to become a mental health clinician one day. I realized there was a lack of qualified clinicians in my community, and I wanted to be the catalyst for change. In 2006, I obtained my bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of California, Irvine. I went on to complete my master's degree in Public Health from the University of Southern California in 2009 and my Master of Social Work from New York University in 2014.

I have worked primarily with individuals ranging from children and adolescents to adults across different cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. I am passionate about providing therapy services, including individual therapy sessions, couple therapy, and group therapy, as they offer opportunities for self-discovery while connecting people who share similar experiences. I specialize in working with people struggling with anxiety, depression, identity issues, and trauma; however, I also enjoy helping those seeking general guidance or coaching to reach their self-set goals.

Besides working as a psychotherapist, I also serve on the Board of Directors at the North Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking (NCCAHT). Serving survivors of human trafficking has been another calling of mine, and since 2010, I have continued to advocate and speak up for this vulnerable community.

I grew up bouncing between California and Taiwan, and as the daughter of Taiwanese immigrants, this experience shaped my understanding of emotional complexity, cultural identity, and the many ways we learn to adapt. Having lived between cultures, I'm attuned to the feeling of being caught between worlds and care deeply about helping others find clarity and rootedness. I'm passionate about psychology and mental health, and I find it deeply meaningful to support clients as they build self-awareness, uncover their strengths, and move toward more fulfilling lives. Outside of therapy, I enjoy reading fiction, taking long walks, and spending quiet mornings in cafés. I strive to offer a therapeutic space that is both grounding and empowering.

Helena Chang, LMSW Psychology Today

I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with experience providing individual and group therapy to adults (18+) navigating challenges such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and relational concerns. I hold a Master of Science in Social Work from Columbia University and am licensed to practice in New York, New Jersey, and North Carolina. I approach therapy with warmth, curiosity, and a strong psychodynamic foundation, integrating tools from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) when helpful.
